SEBANE Annual Meeting To Be Held May 3
SEBANE will hold its annual meeting on May 3 at
National Grid in Northborough, MA. The meeting will
run from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. The agenda will include a
presentation from the Massachusetts Renewable
Energy Trust regarding the Trust's new solar
programs and a discussion regarding SEBANE's
priorities for the coming year.
MA Renewable Energy Trust's Small Renewables Initiative
Rebates up to $50,000
The Small Renewables Initiative invites rebate
applications of up to $50,000 for design &
construction of customer-sited eligible renewable
energy projects up to 10 kilowatts. The renewable
energy generation system(s) must be
located at facilities that are connected to an
investor-owned electric distribution utility in
Massachusetts. The applicant may be a public or a
private entity but must be the facility owner or
occupant, and must be the electric utility customer
of record.
The Energy Foundation Releases Navigant Solar Roof Study
Vast Market for Roof-top Solar Possible
An Energy Foundation study, undertaken by
Navigant Consulting, Inc., describes the vast market
potential for rooftop solar photovoltaic systems
in the United States. The study, "PV Grid Connected
Market Potential in 2010 Under a Cost Breakthrough
Scenario," provides an estimate of the market for PV
systems in the United States based on available
rooftop space for residential and commercial solar PV.
The state-by-state analysis, the first of its kind,
concludes that the potential U.S. market for
grid-connected solar rooftop PV could reach 2,900
MW per year by 2010, assuming that the solar
industry can achieve a "breakthrough" price of
$2.00-$2.50 per installed watt.
Spire Inks Deal with Hyundai Heavy Industries
Spire Corporation has entered into a contract to
provide Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. of Ulsan,
Korea a multi-megawatt turnkey photovoltaic module
assembly line. The line is scheduled to be delivered
during the spring of 2005.
Spire's advanced PV module manufacturing equipment
and process technology will enable Hyundai
Industries to manufacture state-of-the-art PV
modules from solar cells to address the growing
Korean and Asian solar PV market.
Solar One Solutions Announces New Products
Solar LED Light and LED Lighting Management System Come to Market
At this week's International LightFair exhibit,
SolarOne Solutions will unveil a new
solar electric overhead white LED light: the SoLed
(tm) LX01 for pathway and park lighting. This
light is designed to appeal to
environmentally-minded, energy-conscious
communities and aesthetically-oriented architects
and landscape designers alike.
The availability of the SoLED LX01 comes two weeks
after SolarOne announced its new patent-pending
SoLed (tm) - mc2 - Solar/LED lighting management
system. This microprocessor-based system
effectively manages the complex balance between
the key components in an autonomous solar powered
light. The mc2 technology effectively acts as
the "brains" between the solar panel, storage battery
and white LED lamps.
New Haven Launches Largest CT Solar Project
On April 11, Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. joined School
Superintendent Dr. Reginald Mayo, and officials from
the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) at the
Barnard Environmental Magnet School to launch a
massive solar photovoltaic (PV) project, which will be
incorporated in the Barnard School renovation. This
solar PV project will be the first commercial system in
Greater New Haven, the largest in Connecticut and
rank among the five largest in New England. This
solar PV project was made possible through the
support of the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund.
Solectria Renewables Inverter Installed at MIT
The 12.6 kW PV System is MIT's Largest
A Solectria Renewables solar integrated photovoltaic
inverter has been installed at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology's Hayden Memorial Library in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. The 12.6 kW PV system
is the first 3 phase commercial photovoltaic system
and the largest photovoltaic system at MIT.
Several SEBANE members participated in the project,
including RWE/Schott Solar, provider of the array and
mounting system, Irradiance, system designer, and
Zapotec Energy, system designer and integrator.
$1 Million PV Array Delivered to MA Innovation Center
Installation is Largest in New England
A $1 million array has been delivered to the
Massachusetts Innovation Center's mammoth Oak Hill
Road complex for a PV system designed by Solar
Design Associates.
"It's about sustainability and being responsible," said
MIC operations officer Karen Sawyer of the
installation. "The project is part of MIC's continuing
efforts to promote energy efficiency and sound
environmental practices throughout the region and is
the biggest solar panel installation in New England,"
Sawyer said.

Konarka Awarded National Science Foundation Grant
Konarka Technologies was awarded a $500,000 grant
from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The
award will help fund Konarka's efforts to increase the
performance of its light-activated power plastic. The
goal of the project is to raise the performance of the
company's dye-sensitized solar cell technology,
including generating more electrical current and
improving efficiency to 10 percent or higher.
MA Leadership Initiative for Teaching and Technology (LIFT2)
Teacher Externships in Renewable Energy
The Leadership Initiative for Teaching and
Technology program is seeking placements for
secondary school teachers in summer "externship"
work assignments in the Renewable Energy industry.
This is a unique opportunity to support teachers from
local school districts who are seeking to upgrade
their professional training and to increase student
and community awareness of renewable energy
applications locally.
