Molecular approaches to solar energy conversion with Professor Michael R. Wasielewski, Northwestern University. This presentation will describe several projects that look to understand how to capture solar photons to generate charges and then use those charges to carry out energy-demanding reactions. This research includes new approaches to increasing light harvesting efficiency in molecular solids using singlet exciton fission to generate two triplet excitons, which in turn will produce two electron-hole pairs; self-assembled nanostructures that independently transport electrons and holes over long distances; and new super-redox agents that use radical ion excited states to provide the high redox potentials needed to power catalysts that drive energy-demanding chemical reactions.
